They may have high-stooped entries with eight or more steps and are NOT handicapped accessible.
Each guest will receive an Official Tour Guidebook with your tickets. The address of each site is included in the Guidebook and marked on a color-coded map. Volunteer Street Guides are located through out the neighborhood to assist with directions and will be wearing a red sash. Docents will greet you at each tour site and have additional information about the home and furnishings. Each Home & Garden Tour site and Special Event has a sign and balloons to mark the entrance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What style are the homes on the tours?
Homes in Savannah vary in age, size, and style. Most are high-stooped with eight or more steps to climb for entry and are not handicapped accessible. These homes are private residences, so interior design may range from period to traditional, contemporary, or modern.
How many sites will we see on each tour?
Each Home & Garden Walking Tour offers five to eight homes and/or garden sites. Because what each homeowner has offered to share is different, some sites are one floor of the home or only a garden, while other sites might include multiple floors and a garden. Occasionally, businesses are included in the tour, but they are typically in addition to the homes and gardens and listed as a Point of Interest.
Is each day a different tour?
Yes! Each day offers a tour of a different area of Savannah's Downtown Historic District. Most tours fall inside the National Landmark Historic District or are otherwise noted.
Can I take photos inside the homes?
Out of respect for the homeowners, no photography or video is allowed inside the homes or gardens. You may take photos of the homes exteriors from the sidewalk.
Do I need to buy a ticket for a specific day/time?
Yes, each day is a different tour, and you will be admitted into the Tour sites for only the specific day and time indicated on the ticket. This time slot is to ensure lines are kept at a minimum.
Where does my Walking Tour start?
These are self-guided tours, so you may visit sites in any order and at your own pace. You may start a Walking Tour at any home on the Tour that day. We suggest you be at one of the homes at the beginning of your ticket time to take maximum advantage of your time interval.
How do I get to the walking tours? If you enjoy walking, most areas of downtown are within walking distance. The Friday Tour is located near Tour Headquarters. The Thursday and Saturday Tours are located closer to Forsyth Park. Parking is more difficult the closer you are to the Savannah River at the north end of Downtown. The city of Savannah offers a free trolley in the Historic District, with limited stops. Their website is http://www.catchacat.org/shuttle.aspx . Sunday's Tour is a five minute drive from downtown, or you may purchase a shuttle ticket from us. Plenty of parking is available in the Ardsley Park neighborhood.
What attire is appropriate to wear?
Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes is appropriate. We request you keep in mind the delicate nature of the hard wood floors in many of the homes. If you have high-heeled shoes or shoes that the Docent believes may damage the floors, you will be asked to remove them in the home.
What happens in case of inclement weather?
All events are held rain or shine.
Do you have a child's priced tour ticket or group discounts?
Beacuse all of the proceeds go to charity, all tickets are the same price, and we are not able to offer any discounts. Small infants carried in their parent’s arms are admitted with their parent's ticket. All other children need a regular priced tour ticket. While we understand that families are traveling and need to attend together, we do not recommend these tours for children.
What payment types do you accept?
We accept Visa and Mastercard online and over the phone. We accept checks and money orders via mail. In the Gift Shop and Tour Headquarters, we accept cash, Visa, and Mastercard.
What is your refund policy?
All sales are final. We regret that we can not offer refunds. If you are not able to attend the Tour, we will provide a Letter of Donation upon your written or emailed request. As all of our proceeds go to charities and historic preservation projects, please consider donating your tickets back to the Tour.
How will I receive my tickets?
Tickets are not mailed. They must be picked up from the Tour Headquarters starting Tuesday the week of the Tour. Bring your printed receipt or confirmation with you to pick up tickets. If you lose your confirmation while traveling, the name on your tickets must match the name on the ID. Please call or email the office to notify us ahead of time if the person picking up the tickets is not the same person that purchased the tickets.
What is your policy on group tours?
While group discounts are not offered, we do enjoy working with groups of all sizes. We can also place your group tickets together for one pick-up, even if everyone in the group prefers to purchase tickets individually. Call the office if you would like advice on events and tours that may appeal to your group. Tour companies are encouraged to contact the city of Savannah for motorcoach information and permits.
Where should I stay?
Savannah is home to many beautiful bed and breakfast inns, hotels, and motels. Please visit our Sponsors and Advertisers page for local establishments that support the Tour through their advertising dollars. Room availability at B&B's becomes limited in the spring, so make your reservations early. For more information about lodging in Savannah visit http://www.savannahvisit.com
What do the Tour proceeds support?
The net proceeds of the Tour are shared by the Tour Partners. Proceeds for the Women of Christ Church Anglican are allocated to charities through a grant-application process. Historic Savannah Foundation uses it's allotment to go towards preservation, and the proceeds for Ardsley Park-Chatham Crescent Garden Club are used for neighborhood beautification and preservation.
When and where are Sunday services?
Christ Church Anglican welcomes all to join us for worship. Our worship services are held at historic Independent Presbyterian Church, located at 207 Bull Street and Oglethorpe Avenue. The 8:00am service is held in the Chapel and uses the 1928 Prayer Book. A second service is held at 9:00 am in the Sanctuary and features a full choir. Additionally, our night time service of Compline will be offered both Friday and Sunday nights, 9:00-9:35 pm in the Sanctuary. All visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend. Tickets are not required to attend any of these services.
